What I'm working on: The Island 3D

Desclaimer: all the images you see here are beta, they are not definitive.
If, in an image, you see strange colours, it's probably because the texture is temporary.
I hope you enjoy these. If you have any comments, leave them below.

1. The Crater

2. The Island from Hydra Island

3. The Lighthouse

4. The Pala Ferry Dock

5. The Island

Hello, Q

I like your 3-D renderings so far. My question is the crater. I'm not so sure the crater is where most people think it is. The obvious crater would be the crater at the South-western corner (the bottom left hand side)

I think the crater the maps refer to is actually in the middle of the island. I think something happened about half way up the island along the eastern mountains that blew out a part of the mountain and left a crater. This would be fairly recently (within 50-100 years).
It may have been the US army testing a nucleur bomb. (Who's to say Jughead was the first?).

Anyway, food for thought. I just finished season 6, but I haven't updated my main map yet.

Hi Mike,

As a matter of fact, the 3D renderings are not that good. Unfortunately, this is the best I can do. And the best my computer can do. So I'm just satisfied by that. It's not the best 3D Island of the Web, of course, but at least is better than my prevoius 3D Island!

As for the Crater, I didn't quite understand what you mean, but here's my take on it.
As I said in previous occasions, I think that the two craters visible on the full view map and the sideview map are one and the same. You can see here what I mean. Also, the Crater was visible at least twice in the show:
episode 206, Abandoned
episode 617, The End
So I think that all these hints point to the fact that the Crater the maps refer to is the one at the south point of the Island. And it's there the Man in Black had his cave.
Of course I could be wrong, (and I wouldn't be surprised, as I was wrong before), but I'm pretty sure on this one.

If you have time, check my updated complete map. It's still a beta, but a comment from you would be much appreciated.

Looking forward to your new map,
Quasark

Good site here! I like you 3d renderings.

That's my attempt to merge all the maps we have been seen in the series. There still some issues with the distances but i think that is the best i can do including all the maps.

The only thing that is changed is some rotation and flipping of the BDM. The map that I'm using is from

cypher80b,
Your map is interesting. You seem very confident about the maps. Have you already checked Rousseau's Map? There are high quality versions of it on Lostpedia here.
There's something I'd like to ask you: why did you flipped the Blast Door Map? And why did you flipped only a part of it (the Hydra and the Looking Glass appear in the same position as in the unflipped blast door map shown in the Via Domus game (that map is considered canon))? Probably you could obtain a better result by not flipping it, as it appears by Ben's Map to the Radio Tower that the Blast Door Map is accurate as it is now.
Anyway, good job!

Anonymous,
I think I didn't understand exactly what you meant. Could you be more specific, please?

Hello Quasark.

I have already checked Rousseau's map since I'm interest in maps from the first season of the series. I'm following most of the blogs out there about mapping, but i never seriously involved, basically because I don't have time to study every single screenshot of mountains, streams, islets, courses etc that all the blogs out there are doing. Although I enjoy reading most of the location and map analysis at all the blogs.

Anyway, I'm experiment with the BDM for a long time now, trying to matching it on different places over the island in a way that the combination of all the maps make sense. At first i start rotating the BDM but soon i realized that if I flip the BDM it could make more sense. There is no specific reason why i do this. It was just a result of experiment and open mind.

Due to the fact that this is just a series, my opinion is that we cannot analyze every single detail and expect to have 100% accurate map. But we can have a "general view" of a map that could be very accurate. I know how difficult is to combine all this maps together basically because the production does not have an accurate map from the beginning and most of the places were added later on.

On the first version of my map the Hydra and The Looking Glass were also flipped. And it was make
more sense due to the cable in Rousseau's map. It's more logical that the cable in Rousseau's map is
the one that leads to The Looking Glass, than a new one that leads to Hydra.

The reason that makes me to change the location of the 2 stations, is the map that will be in Season 6 Boxset and the screenshot you have post here. It seems that they decide to add the Hydra island at the place where the Looking Glass
should be.

Anyway, as i said previous no one can be 100% accurate with the island map. It seems that mapping the island is such mystery as the island itself. :)

Keep the good job here. I'm looking forward to see your complete 3d island.

Greetings,

This is a inquiry for the webmaster/admin here at mappingtheisland.blogspot.com.

Can I use some of the information from this blog post right above if I provide a backlink back to your site?

Thanks,

William,
as long as you give me credits for the work I've done here, you can copy anything you want.
If it's not a problem, it would also be great if you could provide me a link to the site/blog/post you are copying this to, just because I like to keep trace of my work, that's all.

Hey,

Thanks for sharing the link - but unfortunately it seems to be down? Does anybody here at mappingtheisland.blogspot.com have a mirror or another source?

Cheers,
John

John,

I don't know what you are talking about: what's the link that seems to be down?

To everybody: there's a spam filter here at blogger which seems to block all the comments posted. I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do about it. If you don't see your comment posted, it's because I have to get it past the filter. I didn't delete it (as long as it is not spam). I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
